Every year in Alaska, when the air gets a little crisper, the leaves start turning yellow, the fireweed turns red, and Fall starts setting in, it is time for the State Fair to come to town. They have enormous vegetables that actually hold records for being the biggest in the nation. The pumpkin this year was over 1700 pounds! It was huge! They have humongous Cucumbers and Carrots and pretty much every vegetable you can think of. It is cool to go see all of the gigantic vegetables.
This is a picture of how big some of them can get... obviously they do not look like they are all that good to eat, but of course there is a contest every year to see who can grow the biggest.
They also have lots of different shows you can go to while you're at the Fair. We went to the Lumber Jack show; which is basically 3 guys all competing against each other to see who is best. They cut a bunch of wood and climbed trees and did ax throwing, there were a lot of events for them to do. My favorite part of the Lumber Jack show was when they climbed up the poles. There are poles that resemble tree trunks (but without the limbs and stuff) that the Lumber Jacks have to climb up, they were probably a good 40 - 50 ft tall. It was amazing to see how fast they could get to the top, and they watching them come down was even more crazy because they would drop halfway down and not even think twice about the 20 ft drop they just did.
This is Shane, he happened to lose the event but he had a better story in the end. While he was climbing he slipped a little bit and that slowed him down, but then on his way back down his rope that goes around the trunk broke. He ended up free falling from the halfway mark and landing on a mat that is on the ground in case of such an occasion.
Another show that was going on was the Pirate Show. It included some random, nameless pirates as well as the popular ones like Captain Jack Sparrow, Davey Jones and Captain Hook. We didn't actually go to the show because we heard it was Super Lame, but we decided to take pictures with them anyway because they had some pretty cool costumes.

In the middle there is Davey Jones, he has a really good costume. One hand was a Claw and the other was Tentacles. It was pretty cool. This is also the cast of the Circus type show they had going on. There was a tightrope walker, a martial arts guy, a guy who did crazy bicycle tricks, and a few others.
This girl was Matt and I's favorite! She has this ring and another ring that was more like a hula hoop but just as big as this one. She did all these cool tricks inside them and having them carry her places while doing the splits and things like that. It was really good.
I think she liked us to because after seeing lots of other people get pictures with her we were the only ones that I saw that she invited in to have pictures by her ring. We must just come across as Awesome people :)
Of course at the Fair they have ever kind of shop you can imagine. People were running around with face paint and with crazy hair styles, swords, and tons of food. The main reason I went was to get a Funnel Cake, which we took care of right away, but we also made our way into a few other shops as well.
We found these hats in the Party Craft store. Remind you of Alice in Wonderland at all...? Nope, me either.
Before it was time to leave we found the Hula area. They had probably 30 Hula Hoops of all different sizes available just for fun. We were waiting and figured... Why not? There was one that weighed a lot more than the rest that was my favorite because you could keep it going for a very long time without putting much thought or effort into it. It was fun to revive the art of Hula Hooping that I left behind when I was 10.

We found that in one of the shops and decided that it was cute enough to buy, not to mention I was freezing cold all day long and a hat did a lot to help battle the frigid air. (Also, the jacket Kris brought for me - Thank You!)
Overall it was a great day. We went home Super tired, stuffed with Funnel Cake, and ready for bed, but it was a lot of fun.
